People like….William Campbell

William is our farm manager at Mid Coul farms, and with over 3,000 acres of land to manage, he is a busy man and he has to ensure efficient rotation of crops to make sure that the soil is at its best for organic vegetable production.

He studied at Aberdeen University and has a Bachelor of Technology and Business Management with Agriculture. After university he spent some time working for McCain Foods and also worked in Angus growing organic potatoes, before joining TIO in 2007.

We hold regular meetings here at the Mid Coul farm office which helps us organise the work for the team for the week ahead. We need to plan work on the fields and which are ready for the next stage of work. Springtime is a very busy time for us with cultivation, bed forming (for the vegetables), sowing, organising tractors, machinery and other equipment and then when we are starting to harvest both vegetables and the cereals – it is a real balancing act, said William.

As well as the practical side of the job, William also has to keep an eye on the paperwork, and spends time in the farm office at Ardersier co-ordinating with colleagues in the Forres office to ensure the newly harvested organic vegetables (carrots, parsnips, swedes and potatoes) are getting from the fields to the Forres unit to start their journey to our customers.

When not working on the farm William has a passion for sailing, as both work and leisure can be affected by the weather he hopes that we have a good summer, ideally rain at night and sunshine during day – my ideal! …
