Autumn's here but wet and windy !

Phew, at last the harvest is in.

Despite challenging weather conditions! We eventually managed to get all our crops , wheat, oats, barley and peas - harvested. We use some of these crops for feeding our own livestock over the winter, the surplus is sold for animal feed. Except our barley which goes to the Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay to be made into organic whisky.

Straw is a bi-product of harvesting and is now a vital commodity for the farm. We use some straw for cattle bedding and the rest is used to cover the carrot crop providing a natural blanket to protect carrots from the snow and frost, and allows us to harvest carrots throughout the winter.

Other vegetables grown on the farm are potatoes and parsnips. We have lifted the potatoes, and the parsnips are nearly finished. Carrots are being harvested for our customers from now through till May next year.

On the livestock front, we have bought store cattle to replace the animals that have reached maturity, and replacement ewes and store lambs. The mix of livestock, cereals and vegetables is carefully planned to provide a balanced mixed farm and a good organic yield.
